It is obvious that Joe Biden’s Justice Department overreaches in a lot of areas. However, its involvement with the school boards is too far. The decision for the Justice Department to get involved in the school board is outrageous. This hot-button issue is showing us that there is a limit to how much Americans should accept. In addition, it is making us think where does this end?
Justice Department Memorandum
On October 4th, 2021, the Attorney General announced that the regional FBI would be meeting with government officials through the next weeks. The reason? Dissent. That might seem hyperbolic but it is true. Over the last couple of months, people have been dissatisfied with school policies involving masks and critical race theory. The memo states that this has caused a “spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence.”
The memo came after the National School Board Association called for government intervention. During the summer, nationwide protests were being held by parents over Critical Race Theory and mask mandates. In fact, many parents were showing up to board meets to address these issues. As a result, the NSBA declared that these parents were an “immediate threat” by showing up to these meetings. Furthermore, the association told the government that these parents are domestic terrorists for these actions.
Let’s be clear. This is not domestic terrorism. In reality, this pushback against parents who care about what their kids are learning.
Government Overreach
Anyone with a pair of eyes can see that what these parents are doing is not terrorism. No matter how much the Associated Press spins it. Moreover, parents who are active in their children’s education should not be punished. If people have concerns about what is being taught to their children, they have the right to say it. In addition, they have the right to disagree with school policies. It is a parent’s right to address their concerns to the school board. Yet, the Attorney General and National School Board Association consider these parents threats and are involving themselves in local matters.
If there are disputes between the school board and parents then it should be handled on the local level. This is blatant and dangerous overreach. The FBI is getting involved because parents are saying they do not want these policies and curriculum. Joe Biden’s Justice Department overreach is a step towards government control. The FBI resources are being used to suppress parents, who have the right to know what their children are learning. Also, they have every right to be in those meetings.
The line has to be drawn here. Otherwise, where will it end? The government’s active role in suppressing parents from engaging is a violation of the First Amendment. Regardless of the reasoning, criminalizing active and attentive parents is a step in the wrong direction. And I do not know where that direction leads.
